As the sporting year comes to an end, it is a time to look back at the wild, unexpected and truly amazing year in Franklin High Athletics. A year that included sectional final appearances, state champions, MVP’S and amazing moments. So lets take a look back on the year that was, and the year that was unforgettable.

Girls Athlete of the Year: Kristi Kirshe: There was many great athletes from the girls side this year but this is a no doubter. Senior Kristi Kirshe had a year that was no less then stealer. The High School All-American and Gatorade Soccer player of year led the FHS girls Soccer team to their first state championship in school history scoring two goals in the state championship against Nashoba and finished her soccer career with 102 goals and 46 assists. Kirshe also help lead the girls basketball team to the South Sectional final and the girls Lacrosse team to their second straight Hock title. The Williams College bound athlete had one of best years in FHS history and could not have come at a better time.

Boys Athlete of the Year: Sam Bohmiller: The Babson-bound Senior had all the expectations in the world after a superb junior season and he all but met and exceeded them. Bohmiller had a year that had a hock all-star, a member of the all-south sectional team and finishing his career with 975 points which is 6th all time in FHS history. Bohmiller lead his team to the 2nd round of the MIAA tournament and was the man down the stretch for the third straight year for the Panthers.

Girls Moment of the Year: Girls Soccer State Championship: Probably the moment of the last decade for FHS girls soccer team was the night they won their first state championship in school history against Nashoba. No one could touch the girls team this year as their 22-0-1 record left teams not knowing what hit them. It was a magical season for the girls team and a season that will be remembered for a long time.

Boys Moment of the Year: Basketball beats Mansfield: The best team in the state, undefeated, three of the best players in the hock. You did not half to tell the boys basketball team when they faced Mansfield on senior night. In front of a full rattle city crowd and led by Bohmiller the panthers shocked the state of Massachusetts by beating the Hornets by two points and handed a team that would go to the state final their first loss of the season showing that even the biggest giant can be tamed.

Boys Rookie of the Year: Nick Santucci: The young freshman made a big splash for the varsity baseball team hitting .425(a team best) and becoming the only freshman in the Hockomock league to be voted a hock all star. Santucci, a starter all year at third base for the panthers lead the team in hits, average and on-base percentage.

Girls Rookie of the Year: Bailey Knous : Knous had a banner year her freshman year. A member of the state champion girls soccer team Knous was the only freshman in the state to place in the indoor track All state championships and was the only freshman in the hock to be named a hock all-star in indoor track and had the best 300m time in the hockomock league(41.73).

Coach of the Year: Coach Geysen: For 30 years Coach Geysen has coached soccer, track and field and basketball at FHS. But this year could have been his best. The coach of the state championship girls soccer team Coach Geysen won his first state championship and was named Boston globe all scholastic coach of the year for the second time in three years. Coach Geysen will cap off an amazing year when in the summer will be inducted into the Mass soccer coaches hall of fame which is very well deserved.

On Friday June 14th, Change for Chance (the same club that helped put on the great Hollywood Nights show) is giving students to wear hats in order to support Change for a Chance’s fight to educate girls in Kwala, Tanzania.

Students will be able to wear any (school appropriate) hate ALL DAY by simply donating $1 at the beginning of the day at a table in the main entrance.

After donating the dollar, students will receive a stamp/sticker that indicates they have donated and are allowed to wear their hat!

This is a great cause that all students should support, plus you get to show off that sweet hat you bought that one time.

So here’s the rundown on how you can support this great cause

Friday June 14th

Donate One Dollar

Wear a Hat!

Instagram and Facebook are some fun, and for the most part addicting, apps to have on our smart phones. However it seems as if a new app has taken the role as the next new thing that seems to leave people’s mouths at least twenty times a day. Snapchat, I think it’s called? Kidding, because obviously I have one myself and am just as enchanted in it’s take-picture-then-send-to-friend glory. Because really, that’s all it is.

However, even though it has the same capability of a camera on a cellphone, there is something about this app that makes it more….”legit?” Maybe not the right word, but I know that one of the reasons for this app becoming such a frenzy is because of its easy access to taking a goofy picture of a friend and then sending it to them when they least expect it. Or at least that’s my special little reason.

Don’t get me wrong though, there are definitely some setbacks to this app that not many of us care to think about. Like for example, pulling our cellphones out because we’re too weak to fight the temptation, and getting caught in the act by a teacher. Or even worse when we send the embarrassing picture to the wrong person…whoops.

Well those are my issues with this fantastic app, and if i’m missing something, then you’re obviously free to comment below. On the other hand, if you have no idea what I’m talking about, and have no experience with the notorious ghost app, then get one. MMM..like how about NOW? http://www.snapchat.com/

Pull that piece
under the headband and through
Add another add

What’s Next For Franklin High?
By: Becca Shawver
Have you ever wondered who came before us, or who will come after? Are we what the class of 1924 thought we would be? Will the class of 2020 be anything like us? Are we moving forward or are we just standing still, waiting for some other class to make a name for Franklin High?
With a new school being built it’s a chance for Franklin High School to be known for more than a field house full of memories. The sophmores today will be the first seniors in the new school, leading the way for everyone after us. The high school now has a reputation being run down and this new high school gives us an opportunity to have pride in where we go to school.
The first high school was Horace Mann High School, where students attended from 1896-1924. In those days girls our age were strapped into corsets and weren’t allowed to be in the presence of a man unless they were chaperoned and boys were held to the highest of standards. The high schools after Horace Mann High changed how girls were perceived and how the boys were expected to act. What will we change, moving from this high school to the next?
